In 1955, the Parish Priest Fr Girard Frendo asked the Provincial Superior of the Sisters of Charity, Sr Annunziata Robbiani, to establish a school in Gudja. She forwarded the request and received permission from the Mother General in Rome, Sr Giovanna Voltolini. On the 29th September 1955, the sisters started to give lessons in a house that was the property of the Catholic Action. Since the house was not adequate as a school, the sisters, with the help of Fr Lorenzo Cachia, parish priest of Gudja, bought some land in 1962 that would house both the school and the convent. The Architect was Edwin England Sant Fournier and the construction was directed by Mr Ganni Calleja. The first stone was laid in May 1963. On the 28th December 1964 both the school and the convent were completed and officially opened in the presence of the Minister of Education Dr A Paris and blessed by the Archbishop Gonzi. Both the school and the convent were from then on known as St Joan Antide school and convent. Till 1999 the school consisted of a ground floor building having seven classrooms, a basement and a Hall and a front gate playground area. However, works of extension and restructuring were greatly and urgently felt. So Architect Jesmond Mugliett was appointed to draw a plan and follow the new construction which was completed and officially inaugurated on the 14th December 1999. Now it can take an average population of 300 students divided in 12 classes. The school is also equipped by a full pitch ground, a computer lab, a library, the administration area, staff room, remedial room, counseling room and store rooms. Holy Family school at B’Bugia is the intake kindergarten school from where they pass on to St Joan Antide school in Gudja and eventually, if the students wish to, they may proceed to the Immaculate Conception secondary school at Tarxien. All these schools of the same congregation offer 12 years of human, spiritual and academic formation in the spirit of St Jeanne Antide Thouret. |
